Best Places in The Black Forest

Black Forest is home to many endemic plant and animal species with its natural habitats and conservation areas. Many wild animals live in this forest, such as wild boar, deer, fox and various bird species.

There are several hidden gems that you can discover in the Black Forest and we have gathered our favorites for you. Let’s start with the best places in the Black Forest!

Schwarzwaldhochstraße

Black Forest Main Road, also known as B500 road, starts from Baden-Baden and ends in Freudenstadt. This road is about 60 km long and perfect choice for you, if you would like to drive through fascinating Black Forest views. Since the road runs through the forest, there are plenty of bends. That’s why driving can be a little tiring, but it definitely worths it!

Due to the scenic view and enjoyable twists and turns, this route has been very popular among the bikers and cyclists. Especially in summer, you can see bikers and cyclists drive in big groups.

Moreover, there are many view points, cafes, restaurants or hotels along the route. We shared our favorite spot below which has a great view of Black Forest. This spot is even suitable for caravans for one night stay.

Mummelsee

Mummelsee is a crater lake and is one of the most famous natural lakes in the Black Forest. This lake has even a legend. According to legend, a beautiful water nymph was living in the lake and returning the knights who were buried in the waters from time to time.

You can take a walk around the lake and enjoy the lake view on wooden benches or sun loungers. There are also some restaurants near the lake. Moreover, we would highly recommend the Black Forest bread from the bakery of the lake.

It is possible to reach this lake by car or public transport. By car, you can come via Schwarzwaldhochstraße and park in free parking spots right in front of the restaurants. On the other hand by public transport, you can get on the bus line X45 from Baden-Baden Bahnhof stop and get off at the Mummelsee stop. This station is just 3 min walking distance to the lake. It is possible to buy your ticket for the bus directly from the bus driver. If you have BahnCard from Deutsche Bahn, you can use this card on buses in this region. 🙂

Ruhestein

Ruhestein is an ideal area for skiing and other winter sports during winter. There are ski and snowboard tracks for different levels, as well as sled areas in this region. In addition, it is also possible to take ski trainings and rent ski equipments from the Ski Center.

You can reach here by public transport with the bus line X45 from Baden-Baden Bahnhof and you need to get off at the Nationalparkzentrum Ruhestein stop. It is also possible to access the Ruhestein by car. Once we come to Ruhestein, we always park in this parking spot in front of Ruhestein. It costs 6 Euro per day.

Nationalpark Schwarzwald

The Black Forest National Park covers a very large area and has several hiking routes for different difficulty levels. During your hikes, you can breath fresh air and enjoy the amazing nature. It is possible to reach this national park from different directions considering the size of it.

Our favorite hiking route is from Ruhestein to Wildsee. In this route, you can return to your starting point by drawing a huge circle. This route also offers you wild blueberries along the way. They are incredibly delicious, so don’t miss them! 🙂

Wildsee: Best Places in the Black Forest

One of the best places in the Black Forest is Wildsee, which is an impressive lake in the middle of the Black Forest National Park. You can reach the lake by walking down a steep pathway. As the pathway is partially soil and rock, it might be extremely slippery especially in rainy or snowy weather. So, we would highly recommend to wear hiking shoes.

While you would move like a goat on the path towards the lake, it is impossible not to admire the different shades of green and birdsongs in the forest. In front of the lake, there are huge rocks where you can sit and enjoy the view. We would recommend you to carry some food or drink with you for a picnic here.

Since this lake is declared as a wildlife sanctuary, it is not allowed to swim. Since the water is not very clear, swimming is not charming anyways.

Triberg

Triberg is a city famous for the waterfalls and cuckoo clocks in the Black Forest. There is a waterfall, called as Triberg Wasserfälle in this city. It is considered as the highest waterfall in Germany, which falls at 7 levels from a height of 163 m. The waterfall is in the walking distance to the city center. There are wooden bridges where you can be fascinated by the levels of the waterfall along the walking route.

Due to its stepped structure, it is not possible to see the entire waterfall once. But the step-by-step views are quite satisfactory. This waterfall are lightened up until 22:00. If you are going to come here in winter, we would definitely recommend you to wear hiking shoes in order not to slip.

The current entrance fee of the waterfall can be found on Triberg. For 2024, the adult fee is 6-8 Euro, and 5.5-7.5 Euro for children and young people between the ages of 6-17. You can also enter Triberg-Land with the ticket you will buy from here.

Triberg-Land, on the other hand, is a museum in which forests, traditional German houses and trains are depicted in miniature form. We loved the detailed miniatures.

Apart from that, you can see many cuckoo clock shops in this city. The most famous one of these shops is the Haus der 1000 Uhren, which was established in 1881. This place has been producing cuckoo clocks for 6 generations.
